The Loxodonta Africana (the African savannah elephant) is the largest terrestrial animal on the planet and one of the most representative species of the African wild. The mighty creatures can be found in the grasslands, woodland, and the open savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa; they are associated with power, intelligence, and courage. They influence the ecosystems they inhabit, and their behaviours have intrigued human beings over the centuries. Physical Characteristics
African savannah elephants are known to be huge in size. Adult males (bulls) are up to 4 meters (13 feet) at the shoulder and weigh 4,500 to 7,000 kilograms. Women are smaller with an average height of 2.7 meters and a weight between 3,000 and 4,000 kilograms. They are characterised by their large fan-shaped ears, bigger than those of their close relatives, the African forest creatures, Loxodonta cyclotis. Not only do these ears help the elephant to hear, but they also contribute to thermoregulation, a process that helps the creature to cool down in the hot savannah climate
Over 40,000 muscles are present in their trunks, the long and muscular extensions of the upper lip and nose. The trunk can be utilised in many functions such as feeding, drinking, communication and as a defence weapon. Males and females have tusks, or long ivory-headed incisor teeth that develop during their lifetime. They dig water out with tusks, strip trees of their bark, in certain places.
The African savannah elephant has a thick and wrinkled skin that is grayish-brown and can be dusty because of their habit of spraying mud/sand on their skin. This not only cools down their bodies but also serves as an in-built sunscreen and insect repellent.
Habitat and Distribution
The savannah elephants are fairly spread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but the countries of Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe have large numbers of these animals. They like open grasslands and light woodlands like savannah, but also scrublands and deserts. Availability of water and food determines their range to a large extent.

Social Organization
The social structures of the savannah elephants are well-developed. They co-exist in matriarchal families headed by the oldest and in most cases the most experienced woman, the matriarch. An average family set can include 10 to 15 related females and their children. The matriarch has an important role in the leadership of the group, particularly when they are migrating, as well as when there is scarcity. She knows water, how to move without being caught, and predator threats are what keep the herd intact.
Males, on the contrary, abandon their groups of origin at adolescence, at the age of 12 to 15 years. They also lead a single life or loosely organised bachelor groups, with only an affiliation with female herds during mating times. Mature bulls experience a phase called the musth or high testosterone, aggressive sex period. Males in musth fight each other and claim dominance and access to females.
Elephants have a fairly elaborate set of vocalisations, body language and seismic signals with which they communicate. The low-frequency rumbles, some of which are not audible to people, can go over long distances along the ground and are sensed by sensitive pads on their feet. It is a form of communication that helps the elephants to organise, communicate danger and maintain social relationships despite the separation over several kilometres.
Intelligence and Emotions
The intelligence of African savannah elephants is one of the most amazing facts about them. They show problem-solving skills, the use of tools and good memory. Research has revealed that elephants are able to identify themselves in mirrors, which means that the animals are self-aware. They also practice empathy, mourning practices and have close attachments in their social groups.
Family members have been seen touching the body, guarding it, and even coming back to the location, long after the demise of an elephant. These indicate the existence of a profound emotional depth, which makes them one of the most socially complex animals in the wild.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Elephants are known to have one of the longest gestation periods in the animal world, and this gestation period is approximately 22 months. Only one calf is born, which weighs approximately 100 kilograms. Calves are very attached to their mothers and are looked after by the rest of the herd in a care system. The mean female elephant breeding cycle is 4-6 years, but again, this may vary according to environmental conditions and stress.
Elephants become sexually active at the age of about 12, although males do not always have success until they are in their late 20s or 30s, when they are large and strong enough to contest the other males. Women, by contrast, can start having babies as teenagers and go on well into their 50s. Elephants are long-lived (50-60-70 years) and elderly mammals are prone to dangers as their population grows slowly.
Conservation Challenges
African savannah elephants are under serious threat despite their power and robustness. Loss of habitat to agricultural activity, human habitation, and infrastructure has subdivided their habitats, restricting access to water and food. Another burning problem is the human-elephant conflict, especially in the regions where the animals destroy crops and farmers retaliate.
The biggest threat is the poaching of ivory. Even though the ivory trade was prohibited in 1989, hunters are still active in certain areas. The ivory trade, especially in Asia, has reduced the number of elephants to alarming levels.
The severity of population declines across its range is reflected in the African savannah elephant being listed as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2021. There are some countries, like Botswana and Tanzania, that have had a large population, but there are other countries that have had a drastic decrease.

National parks and reserves are some of the places where the protection of the elephant population is essential.
